It’s a family affair at Democracy. Isabelle Whitley runs the
business side of things, while her mother, Nelly, has an innate
sense of what women in the desert want to wear. Together they
go on buying expeditions for the store, bringing back only a few
pieces from carefully chosen lines to create one-of-a-kind looks.
What inspired you to start your business?
It was really to help my mom fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a
clothing store. She’d worked at Democracy since 2000 and when
the previous owner retired a few years back, my husband and I
decided to buy the store and let my mom do her thing.
What makes your store unique?
We carry brands from all over the world — France, Australia, and
Denmark. We offer classic, comfortable resortwear for women
ages 30 to 95.
How do you define style?
Casual, feminine, and comfortable.
How do you create the perfect desert chic look?
Pair a bright, eye-catching Tolani caftan with strappy flat sandals for
daytime or a pair of great heels to dress it up for an evening look.
What key pieces should every woman own in the spring?
A crisp white button-up shirt, a light pair of linen pants — add a
scarf and you’re good to go!
What trends and colors are dominant this spring?
Dresses, tons of dresses, and palazzo pants! Colorwise, lots
of berries, sunrise hues, and hazy neutrals like fawns, paper-whites, and mushroom shades.
